In this context and for the purpose of this essay, gender simply refers to the category of belonging of either being a female or a male. And when we talk of women’s empowerment, it simply means making women feel as equally important in society as men and giving them more opportunities to excel in different aspects of life. However, the sounds of these words in the ears of some men who misconstrue the whole concept and the idea behind it, feels like a slap on their faces. No man should feel insecure, threaten or demean by gender equality or women’s empowerment simply because the concept is not aimed at making women grow stronger muscles to push away men and be in control of everything. But instead it is meant at giving women more opportunities to partner with men for a fast and well developed society. You will all agree with me that two heads are better than one. Thus, we do not only need women in our labour force, we also need them in our decision making processes. Their opinion truly matters and shall always yield great success hence the adage ‘’behind every great man there is a great woman.’’
Women by nature are family loving and hardworking. I therefore, write without an iota of doubt that giving them more opportunities, to per-take in national development means attainment of higher developmental goals. It is generally accepted that companies with the same number of women in their labour force as men are most likely to flourish and do well in business than those which are entirely dominated by men. At this juncture, we would come to the realization that women contributed greatly in boosting our economy and if they are to be further empowered and given equal opportunities like their male counterpart the living standard of everyone in society will improve. Nevertheless, despite the limited opportunities given to them; women can be seen almost everywhere struggling for the sake of their families to make ends meet. I had always said if women were physically strenuous like men, there will be no hunger in the world. I can comfortably tell you that women are the leaders in the fight against starvation. This assertion can be justified by looking at the high number of people especially in Africa women are feeding with the use of their simple agricultural tools. Their involvement in different farming aspects is visible to all and surpasses doubt. Therefore, if women are making all these positive contributions in our society, I see no harm in empowering them and seeing them as equally important as men feel they are. Most importantly, the significance of women in society and to men in general is just like the two wheels of a bicycle the absence of one wheel will result to the dysfunctional of the other. Women should not be seen as house wives but as home makers. Any child whose well behaved, morally-upright and productive in society was first taught by his or her mother even well before the father.
it is very clear to all of us that women have passed through a lot of tragedies and social injustices like sexual violence, discrimination, physical assault, forceful marriages, deprival of the possession of valuable assets such as land etc. women’s empowerment as a concept in its call, is advocating for the total eradication of these evils in our society so as to ensure the equal treatment of women as men, since every human being has the right to life and the right to enjoy human dignity. Women’s empowerment and gender equality also calls for the higher Education of women to meet the number of the highly educated men. Education itself is important for the general well-being of women, as it will develop their self-esteem and make them more ambitious and aware of things going on around their world. It will further prepare them better to face challenges at any level and make them to become more analytic and reasonable before arriving at conclusions. Gender equality and women’s empowerment will help men psychologically since they will no longer see themselves weak when certain roles in society are played by women. Conclusively I would say, women are our mothers, sisters, Aunties, daughters, etc. therefore they should be loved, respected and considered in whatsoever we are doing. And always remember, empowering women means empowering the whole human race.
